Nintendo releases the Nintendo 64

The Nintendo 64 is a 64-bit games console developed by Nintendo. It is the successor to the 16-bit SNES.

Nintendo launched the Nintendo 64 in Japan on the 23rd June 1996, then North America on the 29th September 1996, and Europe and Australia on the 1st March 1997.

The Nintendo 64 was developed under the codename Project Reality. It was the world's first true 64-bit console, powered by the NEC VR4300 CPU.

At launch in the UK, the Nintendo 64 cost £249.99. Just three games were available at launch: Pilotwings 64, Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, and Super Mario 64.
